Environmental policy: towards zero wastewater contaminationNew treatment plant at Bayas Del Sur makes important contribution to pollution reduction of surface waters Our sustainable production concepts, to which we are commited in the framework of HACCP- plans and sustainable production, led to our new biological treatment plant for waste water from juice production which usually contains traces of organic material. The Plant has gone into operation in December 2010. It was designed by "Lombrifiltros de Chile- Ingeniería Ambiental Ltda." and built by "Constructora ECOCAL", located in the city of Puerto Montt.
The new plant is extremely eco-efficient: An intelligent basin management in the wastewater supply to the basins and the design of the biological stage as compost sprinkler system allows a highly efficient and energy-optimized operation. Since the system is built about 12 feet below plant level at 320 yards north of the production facilities, no energy- consuming pumps are necessary for the wastewater. The sprinkler systems are operated with modern, energy-efficient centrifugal pumps that require to be operated 8 hours a day to meet our requirements. The wastewater from the plant´s concentrate production and cleaning procedures in excess of the officially permitted separation criterion for discharge have so far been collected in tailing ponds. The resulting slurries were then disposed of by contracting companies. The plant achieves an oxygen demand reduction of wastewater from about 170 to 35 mg / l DBO5. This value complies with the extremely strict wastewater standards in Switzerland and well surpasses the usual limits in Chile for this kind of redsidues. With this environmental concept, we ommit the entire workforce and suppliers to further improve processing and product quality: Since 2008, the newly developed HACCP certifications already contribute to minimizing the environmental impact of sugar-containing waste water from the concentrate production.
Besides from providing important impetus for water protection, biological tratment creates synergies and saves costs. The project is also expected to contribute to the future production safety at Bayas Del Sur and help secure jobs.
